Retro Diary #69 – Tony Hawk’s Racist Wasteland

Sunday, June 4th, 2017

On Monday, me, my sister and littlest brother went to M&Ds, which is a theme park in Scotland. (and the only one…)

There, they had plenty of arcade machines, from Pacman to Flappy Bird.

The first game I played was some street racing game (which is rare(!)) made by Namco, but I can’t for the life of me remember it’s name…

Then I played some Flappy Bird, it surprisingly works okay as a casual arcade game, especially for kids!

Then I played the original Pac-man… and lost on the first level…

Later on the day, many rides later, I discovered that they had another section where they had more arcade machines!

There, I played some Time Crisis 2, which is a classic, in my opinion!

Then I played Initial D, which was strangely in the shell of a Namco racing game, even though Initial D is a SEGA series…

After that, we went home…

On Friday, I discovered an old forum thread from 2002 discussing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 on the Nintendo 64, as it was being released! It was very interesting! I’ve learnt a lot from it!

On Saturday, my brother wanted to play Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland.

Other than PC, the GameCube version was all I knew I had, so we decided to get the GameCube set up, but as I was looking for the cables, I found the PS2 version, so as my bother prefers the PS2 controller, we set up that console instead.

I watched him play for 10-odd minutes before I had to go somewhere, but we had a laugh at how the game was (like unintentionally) racist, as in sorry mode you only had 1 black skater to choose from and in the character selection screen, the other guys looked like they were chatting away, but the black guy was standing there, alone. Also, he had the same (probably white) voice actor playing him and none of the hair styles in the game suited him. 😛
