Today marks the 10th Anniversary of Acclaim’s Death (I think)

Monday, September 1st, 2014

According to what I’ve read online, the game publisher Acclaim declared bankruptcy on the 1st September 2004, which makes today it’s 10th anniversary. Well, since I rarely get to talk about these guys and the games they’ve made, I guess I’ll dedicate a little time today to so now.

I’ve always thought Acclaim were an underrated company, I really enjoyed their games back in the day, and still enjoy a majority of them today,

Sure, back in the 8 and 16 bit eras, they were awful, but they really upped their game when it came to the 5th generation, with classics such as the Turok games, Forsaken, the Extreme G series, Dave Mirra, Aggresive Inline, Re-Volt, RC Revenge and Fur Fighters. Near the end of their life, they made solid ports of Sega games to PS2 and F355 Challenge to Dreamcast. Okay, granted, they didn’t develop all of the games mentioned above, only published some, but they made a majority of them.

When it came to their “bad” games, there was always light at the end of the tunnel, South Park for example, the console versions have framerate issues and bad draw distance, but the PC version certainly didn’t! Also, you get more varied gameplay on hard mode.

Also, with their 3D wrestling games, they ditched the button combinations in ECW Anarchy Rulz, and added more modes and backstage arenas, and I actually had a lot of fun with that game! Legend of Wrestling sucked, though…

I was talking to my friends and cousins about them, and they were saying the same things. We all think Acclaim didn’t deserve the hate it got, but then again, we only started playing games at the back-end of the 16-bit era, so we didn’t see them at their worst.

So what are your thoughts on Acclaim? Were you glad they bit the dust, or wish for the comeback? Share your thought below.
